It’s almost Halloween, and that means that costumed politicians are about to flood the streets campaigning for candy instead of votes. Masks are a popular choice for political costumes, mostly because they’re so easily recognizable, and so far this year it looks like Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are the most popular selections. The Sarah Palins are dressed for hunting trips, outfitted in election-ready apparel, or barely dressed at all in beachwear and a beauty queen sash. The Obamas I’ve seen mostly stick with corporate attire but make up for the uniform with a surprisingly large and creepy variety of masks, which distort the President’s head into everything from a pumpkin to a Batman supervillain.

Like them or not, political costumes aren’t a trend that’s going to disappear soon–just look at how many places are still selling Richard Nixon masks!
